Bent Polishing

Our chapter bent, cast of aluminum and mounted in a granite base, is located in the entrance to the Leo Engineering Building. Until the summer of 2003, the bent was kept in the Fishbach room. When the engineering library was closed, the Fishbach room became more difficult to access and therefore the bent was not regularly seen by the school's students. In an effort to improve the chapter's presence on campus, the bent was moved to its current location before the start of fall semester, 2003. However, because many students did not realize the importance nor the value of the bent, people frequently left trash on the base and the bent was otherwise neglected.

The upkeep of the bent can be a very tiresome task, as the aluminum constantly becomes tarnished, requiring occasional polishing. Many college chapters use this chemical process as an opportunity to involve candidates in a chapter project. For the first time in who knows how many years, the bent was polished by both current and prospective members. On Friday, February 20, 2004, Patricia Decker and Veronica Huffines (two current officers) met with the four spring candidates to polish the bent. Each candidate was required to polish for a minimum of one-half of one hour (30 minutes). Meeting times were arranged at the candidate interviews.

Supplies needed included aluminum polish*, polishing cloths*, a doorstop, and latex gloves. Items indicated by a * can be found at the paint store on Broadway between 238th and 237th streets. The doorstop was necessary to create adequate ventilation as the cleaning solution produced strong vapors.

Overall, the cleaning of the bent was an exciting experience. Although the bent still needs some more polishing, layers of tarnish were removed and the bent is looking 1000% better than it has in the past couple of months.
